Subiaco Mission

Subiaco Mission

Not only is the prayer and work life of the Monks deeply rooted in the monastic traditions of St Benedict, it is also expressed as active engagement with the surrounding communities through parish, pastoral, youth and community support work.

Briefly Subiaco Mission encompasses the villages surrounding the Monastery, the pre-primary and high schools, the guest house and pastoral centre which hosts church, youth and other groups for spiritual, educational and development workshops, a skills training centre and three agricultural projects aimed at generating food security amongst the villages.

It is traditional practise that Benedictine monasteries need to support themselves and their works through their own efforts so that they remain stable and sustainable houses of prayer and study. For St Benedicts Abbey, Polokwane, which has a missionary function this also holds true.

Since the Abbey moved out to Laatstehoop, GaMothapo, as a means of sustaining themselves the monks began by making church furniture. This enterprise has slowly grown as has its client list which includes churches from many denominations. In 2013 as a natural extension of its training programme it began a Hostel Feeding Programme as an enterprise to enable it to continue its work as a mission and as a house of formation. These two projects currently provide approximately 65% of the abbey’s resources.

The remaining money needs to be raised through its other projects, through fundraising and donations or recovered from its own savings.
In this section we will look at the two enterprise projects in more detail and will also take you on a journey that will illustrate the projects, work and the needs we have.

It has become an increasing reality that a more direct, efficient and up to date approach to fundraising and partnering is necessary if the monastery is to sustain itself and continue with formation and mission work.

We appreciate and welcome any assistance that is offered and given to us. Increasingly though it seems charitable people want to feel their gifts working, want to become partners and experience the joys and successes, the losses and sad departures, the wins as well as the losses that faith based, mission organisations face in their daily lives.

We have faith, and hope, that through our website, social media, correspondence and regular newsletters we will develop lasting meaningful relationships with charitable, concerned and engaged givers.
